Maria Stylianaki

Name: Maria Stylianaki

Lives in: I have lived in Athens in the same neighborhood (Gyzi) for almost 35 years. I love that it’s near the center, and I can see Lycabettus, Akropolis and Peireus from my little terrace.

From: I was born in Germany but raised in a small village in West Peloponesse. I have the most beautiful memories from that period of my life. When I was little I wanted to move to Athens, but now I value those years in the countryside more than anything-a real treasure in my heart!

Occupation:  I’ve been a yoga teacher for the last 20 years.  After studying many different systems of yoga, I now teach hatha yoga. I’m also passionate about mythology and philosophy. I believe yoga is the art of knowing oneself, and I’m honored to teach yoga classes weakly at B&E Goulandis museum surrounded by masterpieces!

Tell us your first three jobs (ever!): While i was studying at the University I taught French, then my next two jobs were working at small gifts shop in my neighbourhood. 🙂

Zodiac Sign: I’m a Virgo.

Enneagram Type: I have no idea, but I would love to know!

What do you love about Athens?: I love the center and how it is full of energy and life! I love that Athens is close to the sea and near the mountains as well. My favorite spot is on top of Lycabettus hill where you can have a 360-degree view of the city and take in the most beautiful sunsets.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you: I love singing!  I have no idea why my family and friends give me “the look” when I do!

Where we are most likely to find you in Lynn’s Kundalini Yoga : As a yoga teacher I have little time to attend other fellow teachers’ classes, but I’m very happy when I manage to! I’ve taken her classes when she was teaching at Bhavana Yoga.

First time you tried Kundalini Yoga?: I tried Kundalini yoga with my friend Alexandros Surya Deva many years ago, and I’ve also attended Lynn’s class when we were both teaching at Bhavana Yoga center a few years ago.

Tell us your top tip to combat climate change: Buy less!

Anything else you’d like us to know?:  I teach an all-levels yoga class at the Basil & Elise Goulandris Modern Art Museum every Tuesday and Thursday at 19:00. It is an amazing experience to do yoga among the art! If you haven’t tried it yet, I would like to invite you.  🙂
